When I bought my savage I had the very sam problem. But actually now I think it's normal for the savage. I used to have problems getting in some sort of neutral between 4th and 5th gear when shifting to careless, but once you got used to it this is no problem anymore. You just have to keep the pressure on the shifter up until you let the clutch go completly.
The gearbox of the savage is a bit rough and noisy in general, but I have not noticed it getting worse in 23000miles
